Welcome!
Dear
Students,
We - and that is all CVMT staff - are looking forward to share with
you
our knowledge, our pleasure as well sweat and tears that inevitably is
associated
with studying and pursuing such scientific fields of intriguing
complexity
like computer vision and computer graphics (visualisation). "Vision is
hard"
we are told by our international prophets, and all at CVMT agree.
So why do we then go on with it? The fact is that we like it - very
much
so - and possibly for different reasons. By trying to "simulate"
aspects
of human visual perception (HVP), or trying to provide useful and
pleasing
input to HVP, we will always face fundamental as well as practical
challenges,
that may relate to any state in the range from hard core theoretical
and
technical science via biological, physiological, and psychological
perception
to "usability" aspects of our technology, where user oriented concerns
are
inspiring our research and development of technical "Tools".
But why have you chosen VGIS/CVG as specialization? Obviously we don't
know,
but we know a lot of good reasons, which you might have had. However,
whatever
your motivation was, there is chance of finding a staff member with a
similar
"soft spot".
And I should also mention the obvious. Images, imaging, and image
information
is involved in all branches of commercial, industrial, and public life,
-
and the general technological developments enable us - you - to further
develop
and apply our technology in an ever increasing number of contexts.
Hence,
when you have got your VGIS/CVG Diploma, the world is open to you with a
richness
of career opportunities. Just see for yourself.
There is such a lot of interesting and different challenges
ahead
of you, and you have many good reasons to be happy for your choice. We
congratulate
you, and advice that you prepare your self for enjoying it with us.
Welcome to our world of visions!

professor of information systems, head of CVMT
Semester meetings and
coordinator
- Semester co-ordinator: Thomas B. Moeslund, Office 3-109
- Semester Meetings: A semester meeting will be held after
1.
and 2. period. They will be announced by the semester co-ordinator.
Projects and Supervisors
- Use of Laboratory equipment: Special CVMT laboratory
equipment
may be available to student projects on permission of the supervisor
- Group meetings with supervisor: The groups should assume
the
responsibility for regularly calling for meetings with the supervisor,
-
weekly or at least twice every month. The group prepares an Agenda
prior
to the meeting, takes minutes during the meeting, and provide the
supervisor
with a brief version of the minutes the day after the meeting. The
agenda
should cover at least the following points:
- "Siden sidst" (report on efforts and progress since last
meeting)
- "Aktuelle problemer" (current problems, theory and praxis)
- "Status i forhold til tidsplan" (status in relation to project
plan
and time schedule)
- "Plan indtil næste møde" (what should be done and
achieved
before next meeting.
- Midterm Seminar: Half way through the semester it is time
to
have a look at overall status and progress for the project work. All
students
and staff of CVMT are invited to a seminar where each group will
present
their project topic, status, and plans for the rest of the term.
An
electronic "Proceedings" of abstracts from each project will be
available
prior to the seminar.
- "Lang afgang": Those who will do a combined 9th and 10th semester
project will have a review meeting in January 2008 for which a brief report
and a presentation should be prepared. Details are arranged with the supervisor.
PE-Questions in VGIS/CVG
In connection with the PE courses at the 8th semester, and at the 9th semester a list containing a number of
questions will be produced and made available to the students and
supervisors. The
questions address important issues in each lecture.
The
questions related to a particular lecture will be presented at that
particular
lecture. At the end of each course a compiled version of all questions
will
be collected and made available.
The purpose of this list of questions is twofold. First of all it
provides
a service to the students as the questions cover the core issues in
each
lecture, that is, the list provides a focus of attention. The second
purpose
is to assist the supervisors at the project exams when they feel it
appropriate
to ask questions within the topics covered in the courses.
Practical Issues
VR Media Lab (VRML)
is the host of CVMT as well as its students. Hence students are supported by the
VRML secretariat (Anne-Marie Rasmussen, room 3-217) regarding group rooms and
by the VRML workshop (Thorsten Gudmundsen, room 3-228) regarding access cards, computer
network, and user accounts. A "Velkommen" note with detailed instructions can
be obtained from Anne-Marie or found at http://www.vrmedialab.dk/pr/studerende/velkommen_sp.html
. Brief extract from "Velkommen to VRML":
- Login at CVMT: All students need a login at VR Media Lab,
which
you can get by filling in the form at
http://www.vrmedialab.dk/net/username/stud.html.
- Group directory: All groups should ask for a group
directory.
By that a group email is created which should be used for communication
with
the supervisor.
- Access card to the laboratory: Fill in the form at
http://www.vrmedialab.dk/net/accesscard.html and talk to Thorsten Gudmundsen
- Computer and network: Questions should be directed to Thorsten.
CVMT recommends that all groups try to structure and organize developed
programs and data, so that the work later might be used/reused by other
students
or the staff at CVMT. In order to facilitate this, a special group
directory
for documentation and final versions of programs and data is created in
/pack/projects-2003/src/groupname,
where groupname is the name of the group. The programs and data in this
base
directory should as far as possible be organized into subdirectories
with standardized names like bin, lib, include, src, share, man, info,
and doc.
The project, programs, and data should furthermore be described in a
README
file in the base directory.
CVMT library
Access to CVMT's library, publications, and copies of former
students'
reports can be found at
http://www.cvmt.dk/publications
Each semester student group
hands
in a report documenting their work. The old reports are located in room
3-108
(NOVI) and can be borrowed for a shorter or longer period. Please
contact
HN, TBM, MST, or CBM before removing any reports from the room. See
listing
of reports produced here
.
At the
CVMT-library
a number of books, journals, and conference proceedings related to the
topics
of the education exist. For more information contact your supervisor.
